Crafting is the process of constructing tools or items as well as blocks in Minecraft. Players can craft by moving items from the inventory to a crafting grid , and placing them in a specific order according to a recipe. A crafting table has access to a 3x3 grid and the 2x2 grid for crafting. Items crafted within the 2x2 grid can be made at the crafting table.

Players playing Creative or Creative Bedrock Edition only] Survival Adventure, SpectatorSurvival, Adventure, or Spectator Java Edition onlyall have access to the 2x2 crafting grid on their inventory screen. Small crafting recipes that are at least 2x2 can be created there. This includes crafting tables and sticks crafting boards, torches, crafting boards, and other shapeless items. To make items using a grid of 3x3 you need to create a crafting table with 4 wooden planks and place it in the open and then press use while facing it. The interface will be displayed with a 3x3 grid that the player can use to create any crafting recipe within the game. You can also access all crafting recipes in the recipe book.
Some recipes do not require their ingredients to be arranged in a certain manner on the crafting grid. They are also known as unstructured recipes. Players can create the fermented spider-eye using its ingredients anywhere on the grid. [note 1]
However most recipes require their ingredients be put in the proper places on the crafting grid. These are often referred to as shaped recipes. Ingredients in recipes that are shaped can be moved up, down or left, right, or left. They can also be flipped to the side. A 3x1 recipe such as bread can be made using the top middle, middle, and bottom rows of the 3x3 grid. It cannot be made using the 2x2 grid since it requires three items to be covered. A bow is made by placing the strings on the left instead.
There are recipes that may not be moved or mirrored in this way. Minecraft survival servers They are commonly referred to as fixed recipe. For instance, the dyes used in banner recipes have to be placed in a specific order to create the desired pattern. Fixed recipes can be added to Bedrock Edition only through data packs and mods.
Crafting is completely silent, unlike other actions in-game such as boiling, smelting and enchanting.
Shapeless recipes are noted on this wiki using a pair intertwined Arrows on the graphic of the crafting table. This symbol doesn't actually appear in the game.

The recipe book is a method to help you determine the best method to use your recipe book.
Minecraft
It serves two functions: as a guide for crafting and as a catalogue of recipes. It shows every crafting recipe that the player has had materials for.
There are many ways to organize crafting recipes for example:
- The first tab contains all recipes that aren't locked. The second tab contains weapons, tools and armor. - The third tab contains building materials. The fourth tab includes food and miscellaneous products. - The fifth tab contains redstone materials.

Some recipes can be animated to conserve space (requires JavaScript). On this wiki, non-shapeless recipes are marked with two intertwined arrows on the graphic of the crafting table while recipes for crafting that are fixed are marked by an exclamation point. These symbols are not used in the game.
